The Union Class

Just outside the district in which I'm running for Congress, but a city I travel everyday for my day job there is a project, the La Bahia hotel in Santa Cruz, that has been on the drawing board for years.

A recent article in the Santa Cruz Sentinel (a MediaNews Group company) highlights a class of people who do to their membership in a Union organization feel entitled to special treatment (higher wages and benefits, etc.) by government.

KTVU FOX 2 & KICU TV36 Candidate Access 2010 Experience

I'd like to thank KTVU FOX 2 for their Candidate Access 2010 program under their Cox Television Election Coverage Initiative. Under this program I and other candidates were given up to five minutes to present our statements on important issues which will be aired at a later date (which I'll let you know when I know) on both KTVU FOX 2 and KICU TV36.

Big Government Bleeds Citizens

This list could go on for days, but I'd like to address a few ways government is damaging to those it purports to serve.

  • Government is a monopoly in the services it provides.
  • Government pays more and gets less.
  • Governments decide who and what will be successful.

Ethics - Standards of Official Conduct

Recently there has been much in the news about ethics violations by Representative Charles B. Rangel and others in the US House of Representatives. While due process should be allowed to take its course I thought it would be a good time to talk about ethical behavior and the fiduciary duties elected government officials have toward their constituents.

Ignorance of the Law

At one time or more in everyone's life they have heard the phrase "Ignorance of the law is no excuse".

For most of us this seems to be reasonable enough. If you commit a crime you shouldn't be able to say you didn't know it was a crime and therefore should be let off with no punishment.

Party Platform Issues

I thought it was about time to revisit the major party national platforms and see where I stand today and whether my views or opinions had changed on the directions they wish to take our nation.

I thought this was going to be short and sweet as I was familiar with the Republican Platform after having been a Republican most of my voting life, but then I pulled up the Democratic Platform; a 59 page agenda to government expansion and control. I'm still going to make it short, because quite frankly most of it is self-evident.

BP Oil Spill Observations

The BP Oil Spill in the Gulf is still in progress and all the reasons are not in so I'm not ready to lay blame to any of the parties involved. In fact at this moment pointing fingers is completely counter productive to remedy. Even if I was to try to lay blame I'm not privy to all the facts, but only to what the various media, industry, and government have deemed appropriate to share with the public. So it would be irresponsible on my part to draw conclusions.

What I will do is make some observations and express my thoughts on how the situation created itself and why solutions are perceived to be slow in coming.

EPA Lead RRP Requirements Draconian

In April of 2008 the EPA issued a rule requiring the use of lead-safe practices applicable to renovation, repair, and painting contractors. This rule began its full effect on April 22, 2010.

In conversations with multiple contractors which this rule is applicable and with the increased knowledge obtained through training I have come to understand the draconian implications this rule will have on everybody who owns, rents, or uses pre-1978 property.

Memorial Day

I honor all who have fought and died in the service of protecting and defending our Country.

To those who have selflessly served and paid the ultimate price I wish there was an opportunity to shake their hand or give them a warm embrace.

Remember whenever you meet a service member that they may be called at anytime to make the sacrifice that we honor today. Shake their hand and embrace them, as they are defending your Constitutional rights with their lives.
